England’s most recent One Day International was on July 17 against India at Old Trafford. Unfortunately for the hosts, they suffered a five-wicket loss. Asked to bat first, England put up a score of 259 before India cleaned up all their batters. In response, Rishabh Pant’s 125* (113) and Hardik Panyda’s 71 (55) helped India win the game and seal the series.
South Africa’s most recent ODI match came against Bangladesh in March 2022, where they lost to the Bengal Tigers by nine wickets at SuperSport Park. Bangladesh bowled South Africa out for 154 and chased down the target in 26.3 overs. The Proteas lost the series 1-2.
South Africa is not on their best streak in ODIs having lost two out of their last three games. England also have notched similar 50-over numbers recently and hence form will be a matter of concern for both teams.

While England did struggle in their final game against India, their skipper, Jos Buttler, found form in this match. Reece Topley was also in exceptional form, taking nine wickets in the last two games of the series.
England will take with them the highs of such recent good performances into the upcoming series. South Africa, on the other hand, have not played an ODI since March this year. Hence, it is likely that England will pocket a victory in the series opener.
