England against Australia is one of cricket’s most intense rivalries. The first-ever Test in the history of the sport featured these two teams and Australia won that encounter at Melbourne in 1877.

A Test series between these two teams is popularly known as the Ashes. The term originated following a satirical obituary that was published in a British newspaper after Australia’s 1882 victory at the Oval, which was their first on English soil.

The obituary said that English cricket had died and "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia". Ever since the 1882 series, the Ashes has taken on a mythical status in Test cricket with the world’s eyes on this encounter whenever Australia plays England in Tests.

The Ashes take place every two years and comprise five Tests. Both teams take turns in hosting the series alternately every couple of years.

These two sides have played each other most frequently in the history of Tests. In total, there have been 72 Ashes series and England has won 32 of them, while Australia has emerged triumphant on 34 occasions. Six series have ended in draws.

Australia will head into the upcoming 2023 Ashes series as holder of the urn, which is widely regarded as the trophy that the winners of the series receive. England last won an Ashes series in 2015.

Over the course of the numerous on-field battles between these two great cricket nations, several records have been created and here we take a closer look at some of those stats and records between England and Australia in Tests.
