Australia’s wicketkeeper-batsman, Alex Carey was at the receiving end of a vicious Jofra Archer delivery, which knocked his helmet off before he started bleeding from his chin during the second semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 against England at Edgbaston.

The 27-year-old, playing the final ball of the eighth over, needed immediate medical attention as blood kept on streaming. The medical staff was quick to apply bandages, as the batsman returned to the crease. As for the fans, however painful the sight was, they were quick to draw a comparison of the event to that of Ricky Ponting’s injury, which the former Australian captain had sustained during the Ashes 2005.

Ponting, facing 6’3” Steve Harmison, was hit right on his cheek before he started bleeding.

As for Carey, he went on to score a 70-ball 46 before falling to Adil Rashid’s trickery. As their top order collapsed, Carey played an important 103-run stand with Steve Smith to save Australia from their blushes.

Meanwhile, Twitter has gone down the memory lane and this is how they are reacting:

Well done, Carey!
