India at Tokyo 2020 Olympics Day 8: As it happened
The Indian contingent's Day 8 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was a mixed bag, with just one athlete qualifying for the finals at the Summer Games.
PV Sindhu (badminton), Pooja Rani and Amit Panghal (boxing), shooters Tejaswini Sawant and Anjum Moudgil (women’s 50m rifle 3 positions) fell to disappointing results on Saturday, July 31 but Sindhu is still in contention to return home with a bronze medal.
Kamalpreet Kaur was the star of the day for India as she qualified for the final of the women's discus throw. The 25-year-old's throw landed at 64 metres, the mark required for automatic qualification, meaning she eclipsed the distances registered by defending gold medallist Sandra Perkovic (63.75m) of Croatia and reigning world champion Yaime Perez (63.18m) of Cuba.
The Indian women's hockey team have qualified for the quarter-finals after Ireland lost 2-0 to Great Britain.
