India at Tokyo 2020 Olympics Day 1: As it happened
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won India's first medal at Tokyo 2020 Olympics as she bagged silver in the women's 49kg weightlifting.
The 26-year-old had a total lift of 202kg - 87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk as the Manipur-girl finished second behind Hou Zihui of China who had a combined effort of 210kg (94 & 116) to set an Olympic record in snatch.
Meanwhile, India's ace shooter Saurabh Chaudhary finished seventh in the Men's 10m air pistol final. The 19-year-old had earlier topped the qualification of the event with a score of 586 out of 600.
In other events, world No. 1 archer Deepika Kumari and her Pravin Jadhav crashed out in the archery mixed event after losing to South Korea 2-6.
Earlier, Deepika and Jadhav had advanced to the quarterfinals beating the Chinese Taipei pair of Lin Chia-En and Tang Chin-Chun 5-3 in the opening elimination round.
In table tennis, Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal were thrashed by Chinese Taipei pair of Lin Yun-ju and Cheng I-Ching in the round of 16 on Saturday. The India duo lost 8-11, 6-11, 5-11, 4-11 in just 27 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym Table.
Manika, however, eased to a comfortable win in the singles category, with a 4-0 win over Great Britain's Tin-Tin Ho. She will be joined in the round of 64 by Sutirtha Mukherjee, who secured a hard-fought 4-3 win against Sweden's Linda Bergstroemin.
However, Indian men’s hockey team started their Tokyo 2020 campaign with a victory as they defeated New Zealand 3-2 in a nail-biting Pool A match.
India's boxing campaign began with Vikas Krishan losing out 0-5 to Japan's Serorets Okazawa in a one-sided game.
While the men's hockey team made a winning start to their Tokyo 2020 campaign, the women's team fell to an embarrassing 5-1 defeat at the hands of world champions the Netherlands.
