Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur will be in action in the women’s discus throw final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Monday, August 2.

The 25-year-old pulled off a monstrous throw of 64m in her third and final attempt to secure automatic qualification for the final round. Kamalpreet finished second in the qualification round in a field of 31, only behind USA's Valarie Allman who recorded a throw of 66.42m. Only Kamalpreet Kaur and Valerie managed to breach the automatic qualification mark of 64m.

Another Indian in the fray, Seema Punia failed to qualify for the final as she managed to register her best throw of 60.57 in her three attempts, which was not enough to be in the top 12.

After making a slow start with a throw of 60.29, Kamalpreet bounced back strongly in her next attempt as she recorded a throw of 63.97, which was near the automatic qualification mark. Later, the Punjab-born girl showed her incredible power as she created history by becoming the first Indian woman to record a 64m throw at the Olympics.

Interestingly, at the start of the year, Kamalpreet became the first Indian woman to breach the 65m barrier in the discus throw and set a new national record. She broke a 12-year-record set by Seema Punia as she recorded a throw of 65.06m at the Athletics Federation Cup.

Just before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she bettered her own record as she recorded a throw of 66.59m at the Indian Grand Prix 4 in Patiala.

While Kamalpreet will look to create history and bag a medal at Tokyo 2020, she will face a tough challenge from the 2016 Olympics champion Sandra Perkovic, silver medallist Melina Robert Michon and bronze medal winner Denia Caballero.
