Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool suffered their third consecutive home defeat on Sunday after Pep Guardiola's Manchester City completed a 4-1 routing in absolute style. A defeat means Liverpool became the first team in 65 years to lose three straight home games in the following year after winning the English top-flight title since Chelsea in March 1956.

Liverpool's defensive frailties were brutally exposed at the Anfield, and the scoreline would have been way different if only Ilkay Gundogan had managed to put his first-half penalty shot on target. Regardless of that, the German scored twice with Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden getting one goal apiece as City thrashed Liverpool at a venue which was a true fortress.

For City, it was their 14th victory on the trot, and they have now equalled the all-time record of longest winning streak by an English club in all competitions; the same as Preston and Arsenal.

Manchester City opened the scoring minutes after the half-time and Liverpool did manage to level through a Mohamed Salah penalty. That penalty goal was, in fact, Liverpool's first home goal in 410 minutes. It also ended Manchester City's run of 602 minutes without conceding a goal both home and away in the Premier League.

Reds' keeper Alisson made as many as two errors leading to the goal and that was one of the talking points from the fixture.

"It's very difficult to explain that we lost 4-1," Klopp said after the game. "We scored our goal and in that moment, the game can go in two directions, but Alisson made two massive mistakes, gave two goals and then there was a genius situation from Phil Foden.

"But we just have to carry on," Klopp continued. "It's not the best moment of our lives and we will try everything [for the top four]. There are enough games to secure that, but we have to win them."

A defeat for Liverpool called for some banter amongst the supporters and this is how they are reacting to it:
