Thiago Silva joins Chelsea on a free transfer
Chelsea have completed the signing of former Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva on a free transfer, with the Brazilian penning down a one-year contract with an option for an additional year.
The 35-year-old’s contract with PSG ended in June this year, but after having signed a short-term extension, he was allowed to play till the Champions League final, where his side lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in Lisbon, Portugal.
Silva’s time with PSG came to end after having spent eight years, and during the tenure, he won a joint-record seven Ligue 1 titles, five Coupes de la Ligue and five Coupes de France.
"I am so happy to be joining Chelsea," Silva said. "I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard's exciting squad for next season and I'm here to challenge for honours.
"See you soon Chelsea fans, I look forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon."
As per the sources, the 35-year-old turned down a two-year offer from the Serie A side, Fiorentina to join Frank Lampard at Chelsea.
The Blues have made a significant impact in the transfer market so far and have already secured the signatures of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for £47.5million, Hakim Ziyech from Ajax £37million and young defender Xavier Mbuyamba from Barcelona. Only a couple of days back, they confirmed the signing of Ben Chilwell from Leicester City for about £55million, which was followed by the arrival on Malang Sarr from Nice on a free transfer, handing the 21-year-old a five-year contract.
As things stand, they are also closing in on securing Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen, a deal that will see them paying a whopping €100m (including add-ons) to the German side.
