Mumbai City FC have secured the services of Spanish striker Igor Angulo from FC Goa on a one-year deal, the Indian Super League (ISL) champions announced on Friday.

Angulo arrives after a memorable debut campaign in the ISL with FC Goa, where he scored 14 goals in 21 games to guide the Gaurs into the playoffs in the 2020-21 season. The Spaniard went on to claim the Golden Boot award.

The 37-year-old, who started his career with Athletic Bilbao in Spain, is the first overseas signing for the Islanders in the transfer window. Angulo was reportedly in talks with Odisha FC but as the talks broke down, it was Mumbai who swooped in and convinced him to join the reigning champions.

Igor Angulo occupies one of the two striker positions, which have been left open following the departures of Adam le Fondre (end of loan from Sydney FC) and Bartholomew Ogbeche, who has signed for Hyderabad FC.

“It’s an honour to join the champions Mumbai City and to be a part of a club that has grand ambitions and wants to fight for titles. I have spent one season in India so far and my experience of the ISL has been incredible. But my focus remains on what I set out to do everywhere I’ve played - I want to win the league," Angulo said.

"The club’s mentality and the coach Sergio Lobera’s philosophy fits right with the way I want to play football too and I am delighted to be here. We have a massive season ahead of us. It will be an honour to defend both our trophies and represent India in the AFC Champions League and I’m ready for the challenge. I cannot wait to get started with my new family and represent our fans and the city of Mumbai in the best way we can,” he added.

Before arriving to the Indian Super League, Igor Angulo plied his trade for four seasons in the Polish Ekstraklasa with Gornik Zabrze. He finished among the top two goal scorers in three consecutive seasons and won the Golden Boot in the 2018-19 season, having scored 24 goals. In his time in Poland, the striker played 154 matches and scored 88 goals.
