Gareth Southgate's England gear up for a stern German test - watch live in India

The feeling of retribution in the English camp will be evident when the Three Lions take on Germany in their UEFA Euro 2020 round of 16 tie at the iconic Wembley Stadium on Tuesday, June 29.

While England’s record against Die Mannschaft hasn't been particularly good, their manager Gareth Southgate will have a point to prove. After all, it was his missed penalty that took Germany into the final of Euro 1996. The Germans, led by Jurgen Klinsmann, went on to win the title.

The two teams have had their fair share of hardships in the group stage this year. While England did finish at the top of Group D, they did so by scoring just two goals in three games. Germany, on the other hand, had to make peace with a second-place finish in Group F after winning just one of their three games. Watch England vs Germany live in India!

England vs Germany head-to-head

England’s last meeting with Germany in an international tournament dates back to June 27, 2010, when the two teams crossed swords in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The likes of Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski and Thomas Muller scored as Germany beat England 4-1.

Since their first meeting in 1930, England and Germany have played a total of 32 matches, including international friendlies, and the former has won 13 of them. Germany, on the other hand, have a slight edge with 15 wins while four games have ended in a draw.

The game on Tuesday is rightly expected to be a tough contest as both teams have shown vulnerability in certain departments. England’s defensive record, however, is pretty tight as they haven’t conceded a goal in over 450 minutes. But then again, they have only won one of their last five meetings against Germany.

England team news and injury

England have a clean slate of health bills as both Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson are fully fit. The only concern for them is the participation of Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount. The duo was forced to self-isolate after coming in contact with Scotland’s Billy Gilmour, who was later tested positive for COVID-19.

While there are no injuries, a certain Phil Foden is at risk of being suspended for the next game if booked against Germany. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Southgate will opt for a four-man defence or a three-man backline.

Germany team news and injury

Thomas Muller played a cameo in Germany’s 2-2 draw against Hungary and is expected to be a part of his team against England as well. The Bayern Munich player was struggling with some knee issues, but he says it won’t stop him from playing.

"If it was a problem, I wouldn't have trained today," Muller said on Saturday at Germany's Euro 2020 base camp in Bavaria.

"The capsular injury does not hold me back and I am experienced enough to deal with it. I'm convinced it won't be a problem for Tuesday,” the German star added.

The only injury issue Germany have is of Lukas Klostermann, who is nursing a thigh injury. Jonas Hoffman, on the other hand, is fit and is available for selection. Furthermore, it is said that defender Antonio Rudiger missed the weekend’s training session due to a cold, but he is expected to recover before the match.
