The second edition of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC 2021-23) started on August 4, 2021, and is scheduled to conclude on March 31, 2023. India’s five-match Test series against England, the Pataudi Trophy, kick-started the second cycle of the World Test Championship. That along with The Ashes are the only series that will feature five Test matches.

Kane Williamson-led New Zealand are the defending champions, but their title defence started on a sour note as they drew once and lost the subsequent match of a two-match Test series against India.

How does the WTC points table work?

A total of 69 matches across 27 series will be played between the nine full members of the ICC during WTC 2021-23. The nine teams are Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

Any series against a team outside of the ICC members are not a part of the World Test Championship. This includes Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe. Furthermore, while there is no fixed number of matches for each side to play, it has been confirmed that teams will play six series - three home and three away - each.

The change in the points system from the cycle now sees the distribution as follow:

Metric Points available per match Percentage of points
Win 12 100
Tie 6 50
Draw 4 33.33
Loss 0 0

No matter the number of matches in a series, a team will earn 12 points for every win. Like the previous edition, the standings in WTC 2021-23 will be determined by the percentage of available points collected.

Matches in the series Total points available
2 24
3 36
4 48
5 60

The ICC says this system ‘allows the relative performance of teams to be compared at any point in time, meaning the cancellation of any matches or series for any reason does not directly impact the points table.’ Note that there are penalties involved for slow over-rate as well. Teams can be docked one point for every fall behind.
