Virat Kohli becomes first Indian to score 10,000 runs in T20 cricket
Team Bangalore captain Virat Kohli has become the second-fastest player to reach the 10,000-run mark in T20 cricket. The Indian cricket team captain reached the landmark against Team Mumbai in the 2021 Indian T20 League. He is now the first Indian to reach the landmark.
Virat Kohli, who recently decided to step away from his role as Bangalore captain after the ongoing Indian T20 League edition, is only the fifth player to breach the 10,000-run mark in T20 cricket. Only the likes of Chris Gayle (14,275), Kieron Pollard (11,195), Shoaib Malik (10,808) and David Warner (10,019) have managed the feat.
While Kohli does have a staggering record in T20 cricket, he is yet to score a century in Twenty20 internationals. Despite playing 90 T20Is and scoring 3159 runs (most by any batsman), the Indian captain has a high score of 94* which he scored against West Indies in December 2019.
However, he does have five centuries in the Indian T20 League and is also the only player in the competition’s history to score more than 900 runs in one campaign. He did so by scoring a whopping 973 runs in the 2016 edition at 81.08.
Despite his best efforts, he fell a step short of the title as Team Hyderabad pipped Bangalore by eight runs in the final. Four of his five centuries in the Indian T20 League came in that season alone. Unfortunately, that’s the closest he has come to winning the Indian T20 League as despite having an elusive record, he has never won the league title.
Kohli also possesses the honour of being the highest run-scorer of the Indian T20 League. He has amazed 6076 runs in 191 innings with five centuries and 40 half-centuries. Only David Warner (50) and Shikhar Dhawan (44) have scored more half-centuries than Kohli in the Indian T20 League.
