The Ireland cricket team will host Zimbabwe in a five-match T20I starting on Friday, August 27.

Zimbabwe’s limited-overs tour of Ireland, which was earlier scheduled to start on August 6, had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic following advice from Ireland's health authorities.

Led by new captain Craig Ervine, Zimbabwe have announced their 18-member squad against Ireland for the shortest format of the game.

Interestingly, veteran batsman Ervine becomes the fifth player to captain the Zimbabwe cricket team in limited-overs cricket since the start of last year. Zimbabwe have been selecting their captain on a rotation basis as Chamu Chibhabha, Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza and Test captain Sean Williams have all had the opportunity to lead The Chevrons recently.

While senior players Brendan Taylor and Sean Williams have returned to the national team after missing the Bangladesh series, most of the other players have been retained from the previous series against the Asian team.

Zimbabwe have failed to qualify for the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in UAE from October and they will look to put on a better show against Ireland.

On the other hand, hosts Ireland will have an opportunity to test themselves ahead of the T20 World Cup.

After suffering a 0-3 thrashing in their last T20I series against South Africa at home, the Andrew Balbirnie-led Ireland side will hope for an improved showing.

The hosts have retained most of their players from the South Africa series except uncapped Stephen Doheny. Ireland have also added all-rounder Curtis Campher, who has received his first senior call-up in T20Is after recovering from an ankle injury.

“Given the T20 World Cup starting in two months we want to provide as much playing time for the players in this format as possible,” Ireland Chair of National Men’s Selectors Andrew White said.

“While we have kept faith with the squad that played in the recent South Africa series, we have additionally brought Curtis Campher in for his first call-up for Ireland in the T20 format. Curtis is back bowling following his injury and will add a dynamic batting and bowling presence to the squad,” he added.
