Australia’s Allan Border is the most successful Ashes captain with 13 wins from 28 Tests. He captained the Australian team in five consecutive Ashes series between 1985 to 1993. Border also holds the all-time record for captaining in the most number of Ashes Tests.

Mike Brearley is the most successful England captain in the Ashes. Brearley led the English side to 11 Ashes victories in 15 Tests making him the second player with the most wins as captain in the Ashes. England faced just a single Ashes Test defeat during Brearley’s tenure as skipper.

Legendary Don Bradman with 11 wins from 19 Tests is next on the list. Bradman led Australia for 12 years between 1985 to 1993, the joint longest tenure in the Ashes alongside England’s Archie MacLaren.

Mark Taylor captained the Australian cricket team between 1994 to 1999, the golden era of Australian cricket where they were completely invincible. Under Taylor’s captaincy, Australia won three back-to-back Ashes series.

Warwick Armstrong of Australia and Bob Simpson of England are the only captains to not lose a single Ashes Test match. Both captained their sides in 10 and eight Ashes Tests respectively.

England’s William Grace and Australian quartet of Steve Waugh, Warwick Armstrong, Monty Noble and Ricky Ponting have each won eight Ashes Test matches.
